The thoughts we think have the power to uplift us or bring us down. While there are aspects of life we can’t control, such as the families we’re born into, natural disasters, illnesses, job layoffs, etc., we do have autonomy over the thoughts, like what we wear, such as a faith based t shirt or music and books we like, that dominate our minds.
The definition of a “thought” is “an idea or opinion produced by thinking, or occurring suddenly in the mind.” Thoughts are simply ideas and opinions, but when you think the same ones over and over, you start to label them as truths, even when they’re not!
As Henry Ford famously said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.”
Simply put, you have the ability to think things on purpose. You don’t just have to passively accept whatever falls into your mind!
When you forget to focus on God’s Word, the devil can gain a foothold on your thoughts and send you into a constant spiral of anxiety, worry, fear, and hopelessness. Your thoughts can literally destroy your mind and self-esteem, and keep you mentally and even physically imprisoned, since the devil comes to kill, steal, and destroy.
“…He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” – John 8:44 NIV.
Satan wants you to think you’re worthless and that you won’t succeed because he’s a liar and a destroyer. He wants you to think that you’re bad and that you don’t deserve God’s love or forgiveness. His ultimate goal is to get you to believe this so you’ll turn away from God.
Our minds are easily influenced, especially when we allow negative thoughts to constantly whirl around without being checked. But the good news is that you have the power and authority of Christ to flee from the devil and ban him from your thoughts.
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7 NIV.
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” – 1 Peter 5:8-9 NIV.
Negative, destructive thoughts are like a toxic wasteland. But God can cut a fresh stream through them to flow out of that will change your mindset to one of joy, peace, hope, and to prosper.
Kristen’s Story
Kristen is a typical woman in her late 20s who struggles with thinking positively. She’s fairly successful working for a marketing firm, but is single and worried that she’ll never find a husband to marry and have kids with. She tends to focus a lot on herself, her problems, and what she doesn’t have but desires. She struggles with her self-esteem, how she looks, and whether others actually like her. Her thoughts are often negative, and she worries a lot. She doesn’t have a lot of hope and faith that things will turn out for the good. She is a Christian and knows about God, but doesn’t really read her Bible consistently or declare the verses as truths she can count on.
Instead, she tends to get mired in the muck of negativity and hopelessness and isn’t particularly grateful. She hasn’t taken the time to visit her doctor and get a thorough exam. Her faith is suffering, and her thoughts are keeping her stuck and afraid to try new things. She’s noticed that her thoughts are creating too much stress, weighing her down, and the stress is becoming unsustainable as she exhausts herself mentally. Kristen needs help that she won’t admit to herself.
She needs a complete physical and a fresh perspective, she needs a change, so she decides to attend a Bible study one night at her church.
The church leader facilitating it begins candidly by saying: “I’m not here to offer a fantasy, but I believe there’s a path to hope, joy, and peace, and it starts with the thoughts you think.”
You see, the Bible addresses the power of the mind and our thoughts quite often. And, science confirms it. Our brains are mighty, and our thoughts shape our self-concept and how we move in the world.
The church leader expands this lesson and proceeds to delve into five verses that address the power of the mind.
- “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” -2 Tim. 1: 7 NKJV
Healthy fear keeps you safe by discouraging you from jumping off a fifth-story balcony or swimming in shark-infested waters. This type of fear serves you.
But constant fear and distrust that aren’t based in reality keep you stuck and bound. Fear holds you back from experiencing life, encouraging others, and living up to your potential.
When you choose fear, you and others around you suffer, he says.
- “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” -Deuteronomy 30:19 NLT
Let’s be frank, many people don’t believe life, especially peace, love, and joy, is a choice. They think circumstances like the job they’re in, the spouse they picked, the environment they live in, etc., are what dictate their happiness. Sure, they play a role, but what if simply choosing Godly thoughts is the key to happiness?
The church leader cites Dr. Caroline Leaf, who backs this concept up in her book “Switch On Your Brain.”
“As we think, we change the physical nature of our brain. As we consciously direct our thinking, we can wire out toxic patterns of thinking and replace them with healthy thoughts.”
This proves that God gave us the free will to create our realities with our thoughts. This Scripture verse confirms it: “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” – Proverbs 23:7 KJV.
- “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” -2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV
Taking every thought captive can seem like an insurmountable task. The thing is, you don’t have to do it as soon as the thought occurs. Accept that you had this thought, feel how it makes you feel, do not harshly criticize yourself for having it, and then take it captive and give it to God, he explains.
The answer to how to capture your thoughts is found in Scripture, Psalm 46:10 NIV, “Be still and know that I am God.” The powerful effects of prayer and meditation are robustly studied and well-known, and confirm what Christians should already know – that sitting in stillness with your thoughts inspires analysis and understanding and creates productive time with the Father.
Capturing your thoughts requires stopping and sitting still, something most Americans seem to have no time for. But as long as you have no time for stillness and prayer, your thoughts, emotions, and feelings will keep calling the shots.
- “I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents up on their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected — even children in the third and fourth generations.” -Exodus 34:7 NLT.
This haunting verse speaks to how your thoughts not only shape your life but also those of your future children and grandchildren.
And, the science of epigenetics backs this up as it shows how your predispositions, bad habits, anxiety, and distaste for small talk can impact your kids before they’re even born.
- “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.” – Philippians 4:8 NIV
What you focus on is what you bring to yourself. People who choose good thoughts, the promises of God, and God’s love understand this. It’s not that they don’t get frustrated or bad things don’t happen to them or they don’t backslide or slip up. They just continue to choose to see God’s image in others and systematically root out victimization, refusing to settle into negative, hopeless thoughts day after day.
Once again, Dr. Leaf confirms this with science by saying: “When you think, you build thoughts, and these become physical substances in your brain.”
The church leader ends the study with this: You were created in God’s image, a picture of hope, peace, and love. What if you actually believed this? I’m not advocating for the kind of “toxic positivity” that ignorantly ignores all the bad in the world and turns you into some kind of Pollyanna. But when you read the Bible, you will see the truth behind God’s timeless words, His promises that you can stand on, and that what you allow into your mind can either knock you down or help you up.
Speak Truth to the Lies
When Satan’s doubt and negativity try to wrestle you to the ground and pin you down, you must speak God’s truth to the lies. Your Heavenly Father sees you, loves you, and forgives you. You can rest in that.
Colossians 3:2 NIV says to “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
We all have stress in our lives, draining responsibilities, people to care for, bills to pay, etc., and these daily hassles can steal our focus from what matters most if we’re not careful. We can’t allow the things of the world to take precedence over God. He will see you through every bump in the road and give you peace.
Read the Word. It is hope. It is power. It is joy. It is God’s unfailing love for you.
We all have lots of thoughts throughout the day. But thoughts are not facts. They are “ideas or opinions occurring suddenly in the mind.” They can be changed. And, the amazing thing is you don’t have to try to change them all on your own with fleeting willpower. God can and will renew your mind when you seek Him and pray.
Is it easy to break out of autopilot and take your thoughts captive? No! Especially when your life has been especially difficult. But is it doable? Absolutely. Once you get in a rhythm with God, it becomes much easier.
When you’re starting the process of changing your thoughts, it will be hard, so don’t judge yourself for all the thoughts that are flying into your brain. There may be years of muck in there that has to be unstuck.
When you do have a good thought, don’t just move on, celebrate that win! It can be extremely hard to get rid of negative thought patterns, especially if you’ve been doing it for years and years! Celebrate that God is transforming your mind, that you are choosing, and revel in it!

“Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.” – Proverbs 28:26 NIV
Changing your thoughts isn’t a one-and-done action. It’s a process that takes lots of practice, every day, probably multiple times a day. But it keeps you coming back to God, which is the goal.
It’s extremely important to read the Bible because it is the key to claiming victory over strongholds and living the life Jesus died to give you. God wants you to have a peaceful life with Him, yourself, and others.
Ephesians 4:23 says, “And, be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude].
When you read and study God’s Word, it opens up a new perspective, which is so powerful in changing your thoughts! The Holy Spirit sets in you the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16), which frees you from barriers that keep you from God’s perfect will.
Dear God, in Jesus’ name, we pray that we will no longer be held back by the old ways of thinking. We will stay present. We will walk forward with you in victory over our thoughts! We thank you for this transformation. Amen!
