Holding on to God With a Heart That Is Still Hurting

Holding on to God With a Heart That Is Still Hurting

August 22, 2026 Posted by Lisa Hornor artist News No Comments

Have you ever tried to pray when your heart is hurting, but nothing comes out?

You know you want to talk to God, but you just sit there. Maybe you are tired of asking the same questions. Maybe you are angry. Maybe you are scared that if you let yourself feel everything, you will completely fall apart.

Grief can do that.

Whatever the loss, it can leave you wondering where God fits into all of this. And sometimes, you may not feel close to Him at all.

But that does not mean your faith is gone.

He Heals the Brokenhearted

There are days when you miss someone so much that even ordinary things feel different.

You hear their favorite song. You see an old photograph. You remember something they used to say. For a moment, you wish you could go back to a time when everything felt normal.

Then you remember that you cannot.

That kind of pain takes time. The Bible says:

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3

Notice that it says heals.

Healing does not always happen quickly. Some wounds need time. Some days you may feel lighter, and other days the sadness may come back without warning. Let it.

You do not have to rush yourself just because other people think you should be feeling better.

When I Am Afraid, I Put My Trust in You

Grief can make the future feel frightening. What will life look like now? Who will be there? Will you ever feel happy again? You may not know.

And honestly, you do not need to know everything right now. The Bible says:

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” — Psalm 56:3

Maybe trusting God today does not mean feeling completely peaceful. Maybe it simply means getting through today and saying, “God, please help me with the next step.”

That is enough. You can trust Him slowly.

God Is the Strength of My Heart

Sometimes, you are just tired. Tired of explaining how you feel. Tired of pretending you are okay. Tired of thinking about what happened and wondering if things could have been different.

There may be mornings when getting through the day feels like enough of an achievement.

Scripture reminds us:

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart.” — Psalm 73:26

You do not have to be strong all the time. If today all you can do is get up, eat something, go to work, or take a shower, that is okay.

Be gentle with yourself.

Why Did You Let This Happen?

There may come a point when you look up at God and ask, “Why?”

Why did this happen? Why did I have to lose them? Why couldn’t You change things?

You may even stop praying because you feel hurt or disappointed.

If that happens, do not be too hard on yourself. Take the time you need. God can handle your questions. And when you are ready, you can find your way back.

Weeping May Stay for the Night

One of the hardest things about grief is that you cannot always predict it. You might feel okay for a week and then suddenly have a difficult afternoon. A date on the calendar, a familiar place, or an old memory can bring everything back.

That does not mean you are back at the beginning. You are simply having a hard day.

There is a beautiful reminder in Scripture:

“Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” — Psalm 30:5

The verse does not promise that tomorrow will be perfect. It reminds us that sorrow is not forever. There can be brighter days again.

Let Faith Find You in Small Things

Not every difficult moment needs an answer. Sometimes, you just need a little peace. Sit outside, read a verse, listen to something calming, or give yourself a few quiet minutes.

A meaningful piece from a spiritual clothing store or spiritual clothing mens collection may also remind you of the faith you still carry, even when you are having a hard day.

The God of Hope

Hope does not always arrive as a big feeling. Sometimes, it is much quieter.

It is deciding to get up tomorrow. It is believing that your heart can feel lighter again. It is trusting that losing one part of your life does not mean losing every beautiful thing that could still come your way.

Romans says:

“The God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him.” — Romans 15:13

So, if you are hurting, take your time.

Know that you can love God and still have questions. You can be angry at him and still find your way back. You can miss someone deeply and still believe that life can hold something good again.

You do not have to force yourself to be okay. Just take today as it comes.

And when you are ready, reach for God again.
